Being a supervisor for student research is an immense responsibility. Add to that, research by the student that involves human subjects and the responsibility increases.
As a supervisor for student research involving human subjects, your job is make sure that your students are conducting research that:
- will not put them in harms way will
- not put their research subjects in harms way
- is culturally sensitive and appropriate
Further, it is your job to make sure they they are in compliance with research standards involving human subjects. This means:
- encouraging your student to visit the IRB site
- go through the IRB steps as outlined on the IRB site, including completion of Kalamazoo College’s ethics training module
- review their application to make sure that it is:
- formatted correctly
- filled out entirely
- most importantly, a sound and feasible research project
