Researcher

Many Faculty and Staff engage in research involving human subjects. If that research will be used in a conference presentation or will be published, you must receive IRB approval before the part of your research project that involves human subjects.

There are a few things to note before applying for IRB approval:

  • A faculty or staff member of Kalamazoo College does not need to take the ethics exam for it is assumed that such training occurred during one’s previous schooling. However, if you would like a refresher, you are welcome to view and complete the Kalamazoo College ethics module.
  • However, you do need to follow the other steps as outlined on this website (step 1, then steps 3-9). Or if you are already familiar with the IRB application process, you can go straight to the “IRB Documents” page, where you can find all the application materials.
  • If you are on the IRB committee, then your application goes through the Chair of the IRB committee.
  • IRB approval expires after one year. If you will continue collecting or analyzing data for your project beyond the initial year, you will need to submit an IRB request for renewal before the year is up.
